Glyph origin

Historical forms of the character
Western Zhou Shuowen Jiezi (compiled in Han) Liushutong (compiled in Ming)
Bronze inscriptions Small seal script Transcribed ancient scripts

Phono-semantic compound (形聲形声, OC *hljaːʔ, *hljaːs) : phonetic (OC *la) + semantic , which is a disambiguation glyph.

Etymology 1

simp. and trad.
alternative forms
"to stop, to halt, to rest" > "resting place" > "lodging house"
Apparently shared with Proto-Kam-Sui [Term?] (*s-lwaB); Proto-Chinese root must have been *s-lwas, identical to PKS, with OC *sl- > *lh- and MC 去聲去声 (qùshēng) (from *-h < *-s) corresponding to KS tone B (Schuessler, 2007). Schuessler further relates (OC *lhah) to (shuì, “to halt, to rest overnight”) < OC *lho(t)s < *lhuats, which, being a closed syllable, reflexes Proto-Chinese medial *-w-; unlike (shè) < MC *ɕiaH < OC *lhah, an open syllable whose phonological structure (at least in MC) did not allow medial *-w-. Schuessler concludes: "The ambivalence in the forms, as in the finals in these two words, is typical for loan words".

Etymology 2

"to pardon"
Perhaps *-s/*-h exoactive of (OC *hljaːʔ) (Schuessler, 2007), see there for further etymology. Wang (1982) relates (OC *hljaːs) to (OC *hljaɡs), despite their different Old Chinese rhymes.
