Location of Estonia in Europe

Estonia, officially the Republic of Estonia, is a country in the Baltic Region of Northern Europe. The capital city is Tallinn. Estonia's neighbors are Sweden, on the other bank of the Baltic Sea, Finland, Russia and Latvia. Its population is 1,332,893.

History

Until 1990, as Estonian SSR, Estonia was a republic of the Soviet Union. On 30 March 1990, the leaders of Estonia declared that the control of their country by the Soviet Union from 1940 was illegal and declared independence of Estonia. On 6 September 1991, the Soviet Union recognized the Estonia's independence.

Estonia became a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) on 29 March 2004. It joined the European Union on 1 May 2004. It joined the eurozone on 1 January 2011.
