Etymology

From dilaw (“yellow”) +‎ -an. The political senses are from the yellow color associated with the Liberal Party of the Philippines and liberalism itself locally. Originally used by both left-wing and right-wing politicians to attack members of the Liberal Party back in the 1980s, but its usage has been revived under the Aquino III and Duterte administrations.
