Phono-semantic compound (形聲／形声) : semantic 疒 (“illness; disease”) + phonetic 契 (OC *kʰeːds, *kʰeːd, *kʰeːd, *kʰɯd).

Sagart (2021c) revises the Old Chinese reconstruction as *k(ə)-tet-s, from non-finite prefix *k(ə)- + a root *tet-s (“to bite”), from which 噬 (OC *m-tet-s, “to bite”) also derives.
