Italian (Italiano) is a Romance language.
In Europe, Italian is the official language of Italy, San Marino, and the Vatican City. It is one of the official languages of Switzerland, with most of the speakers in the southern part of the country near the border with Italy. The language is widely spoken in Malta and in some regions of Slovenia and Croatia. Italian is also an official language of the European Union.
In Africa, Italian is spoken by some in Libya, Eritrea, and part of Somalia because of Italian colonization. It is also spoken in Ethiopia because of the occupation before and during World War II.
