From ver- + mummen. The term mummen is of a complex etymology. It is almost certainly related to several cognates which may ultimately be of onomatopoeic origin. the term is probably cognate with German Mumme (mask), French momon (mask, masquerade), Dutch mom (mask) and English mum (a humming noise produced with closed lips), mumble.
