Borrowing from an Iranian language, compare Ossetian дӕйын (dæjyn, “to suck”), Middle Persian [script needed] (dāyag, “nurse”), Persian دایه (dâye, “nurse”), Northern Kurdish da (“mother”), Sanskrit धयति (dhayati, “to suck, drink”). Cognate also with old Southern Mansi -тай (-taj) (in сыртай (syrtaj, “milk”)), both possibly via Proto-Ugric *täjɜ.[1] The earlier nominative was té, lost in favor of the oblique stem.
