Etymology

17th century, borrowed from Yiddish סחרן (sakhern, to do business), derived from Hebrew סחר (sáḥar, trade). The form was influenced by now obsolete schachen (“to plunder”, with long [aː]), itself from Proto-West Germanic *skāk (robbery). The synonymous Yiddish שאַכערן (shakhern) may be a reborrowing.
