From Proto-Celtic *mendo- (kid, suckling), which could ultimately be from the same root as maoin (mild, tender),[1] though Stokes prefers a comparison to Ancient Greek μαζός (mazós, breast), Old High German manzon, Albanian mεnt (suck).
