From Middle Dutch lindeworm, ultimately from Proto-Germanic *linþawurmiz. Equivalent to a tautological compound of linde (“snake”) + worm (“snake”). Cognate to English lindworm, German Lindwurm, Old Norse linnormr (“constrictor snake”), Norwegian lindorm (“serpent”), Danish lindorm.
