Possibly from Hokkien 蔭／荫 (ìm, “to protect; to shelter”) + Hokkien 寶／宝 (pó, “treasure”), according to Manuel (1948). However, Chan-Yap (1980) disagrees that the word comes from the said Hokkien morphemes.
