Borrowed from Spanish guadaña (“scythe”), from Gothic 𐍅𐌰𐌹𐌸𐌰𐌽𐌴𐌹𐍃 (waiþaneis), or Frankish *waiþanjan (“to pasture, forage”). Both from Proto-Germanic *waiþō (“hunt, pasture, food”).
