fenc
Catalan
Pronunciation
Etymology 1
Inherited from Old Catalan fe, from Latin fēnum, monophthongized variant of faenum, from Proto-Indo-European *dʰeh₁(y)-no-, from *dʰeh₁(y)-. The modern form fenc, which appears to have been taken from a northeastern dialect, has the advantage of distinguishing the word from fe (“faith”). Compare Occitan fen, French foin, Spanish heno.
