From Middle High German enphāhen, from Old High German intvāhan, from Proto-Germanic *andfanhaną. Equivalent to emp- + fangen and further ent- + fangen. Cognate with Dutch ontvangen, Old Saxon antfāhan, obsolete English onfang.
