cai chuva

Macanese

Etymology

Possibly a calque of Cantonese 落雨 (lok6 jyu5, literally fall rain).

Verb

cai chuva

  1. to rain
Azinha vai casa-ia, logo cai chuva
Let's get home quickly, it's going to rain

Usage notes

  • By and large, Macanese does not have a separate one-word verb for raining, i.e. there is no *chovê or *chuvê derived from Portuguese chover.
