Etymology 1
Probably from Vulgar Latin *bysseus, from Latin byssus (“linen”), whence bisso; cognate with English and French beige; French bis; Ligurian and Venetian bixo. However, compare badius (“brownish color”). Doublet of Bixio (a surname).
