From Late Middle High German turnier, alteration (after the verb turnieren) of older turnei, tornei, from Old French tornoi, itself deverbal from Old French tornoiier, tornier (“to turn, romp, fight in a tournament”), from torner (“to turn”), from Latin tornare (“to turn”).
