Etymology
From Latin muscōsum, accusative singular of muscōsus, meaning mossy. Doublet of musgoso. Early forms of the surname came in the form "Mosscosso," which supports the aforementioned origin, given it is the voicing of late Latin 's' that gave rise to the g in 'sc' clusters in Spanish and Galician (such as in musgoso). Alternatively, from mosca (“fly”) + -oso (“place with”). However, there are few, if any examples, in which Latin word-final "a" becomes "o", making this latter etymology unlikely. The surname, from a Galician Medieval noble house.
