-cecilla

Spanish

Etymology

Extended form of -ecilla, using the same formative -c- found in -cilla, -cita.

Suffix

-cecilla f (plural -cecillas)

  1. Alternative form of -cecillo; added to feminine nouns to form diminutives

Usage notes

  • A rare suffix added to feminine words and names to denote a diminutive form. It occurs especially with words ending in a consonant or a vowel other than -a, and does not delete the final vowel (contrast with -ecilla, which is added in place of a vowel that does get deleted).
