From Middle Chinese 錠 (MC dengH|tengH). Compare modern Mandarin 錠/锭 (dìng).

Etymology 2
Compound of 鎖 (jō, “chain”) + 前 (mae, “front”), in reference to the padlock on the front of a chain keeping a door or gate closed. The use of 錠 is an example of ateji.[3]
