From Proto-Algonquian *waʔšaškwa (“muskrat”). Cognate with Fox ashashkwa, Southern East Cree ᐧᐊᒋᔥᒄ (yacishkw), Algonquian, Penobscot móhsskʷehso, Montagnais utshashkᵘ, Atikamekw otcockw, Unami tëmàskwës.
