From Proto-Germanic *wētaz. Cognate with Old Frisian wēt, Old Norse vátr; ultimately related to English water. Also akin to Old Armenian գետ (get, “river”). Compare Luwian [script needed] (wida-, “wet”) (Proto-Indo-European *wed-o-).
