Etymology
From vireō (“to be green, verdant”) + -tum (suffix forming nouns for stands of vegetation). The -c- would be inserted by analogy to forms like frutectum (“thicket, bush”), cārectum (“reed bed”) that are derived from noun stems ending in /k/.
