Etymology
Unclear. Either a compound formation of vë + re or from Proto-Indo-European *wer- (“to observe, pay attention”). Compare (Attic) Ancient Greek ὤρα (ṓra, “care, attention”), Latin vereor (“worship, fear, dread”), Latvian véru (“see, show, notice”), Latin vara (“attentive make, look after; protect, assume”) Old Saxon waron (“observe, protect, look after, watch over, keep”).[1]
