Unclear. Either a compound formation of + re or from Proto-Indo-European *wer- (to observe, pay attention). Compare (Attic) Ancient Greek ὤρα (ṓra, care, attention), Latin vereor (worship, fear, dread), Latvian véru (see, show, notice), Latin vara (attentive make, look after; protect, assume) Old Saxon waron (observe, protect, look after, watch over, keep).[1]
