Etymology
From Proto-Inuit *ukiu- (“winter, autumn, year, spend the winter”), from Proto-Eskimo *ukju(r) (“winter, autumn, year”). Compare ukiaq (“autumn”), and ukiivoq (“spends the winter”). Cognate to Inuktitut ᐅᑭᐅᖅ (okioq), Inupiaq ukiuq.
