Inherited from Old Swedish tīdholagh, þȳþilagh, þȳþolagh. First part of compound from thȳdhas (“to have intercourse with”), from Old Norse þýðr. Second part equivalent to the noun lag in the sense "lie down" (as in nederlag, for example).
