Etymology 1
Likely from Middle Chinese 初 (MC tsrhjo). Doublet of sơ.
Its initial ‹th-› possibly results from the same phonological change which yields ‹s-› vs. ‹th-› doublets like SV readings sái and thái from Middle Chinese 蔡 (MC tshajH) as well as sẹo and thẹo (“scar”), etc.
Etymology 2
Non-Sino-Vietnamese reading of Chinese 詩 (“poem”, SV: thi).
