From Old Norse *sulka, *sylka, from Proto-Germanic *sulukōną, *sulikōną. Cognate with dialectal Danish sulke, solke, sylke, sølke (“to sully”), Norwegian Nynorsk sulka (“to sully”), German sulchen, sülchen (“to sully, wallow around in mud or filth”).
