Borrowed from Old Occitan esquiera, from Old French eschiere,[1] ultimately from Proto-Germanic *skarō, whence also Old English sċearu, from Proto-Indo-European *(s)ker- (to part; split; cut off; sever; divide). Compare German Schar (troop), Danish skare (host", "crowd).
