Borrowed from Old Occitan esquiera, from Old French eschiere,[1] ultimately from Proto-Germanic *skarō, whence also Old English sċearu, from Proto-Indo-European *(s)ker- (“to part; split; cut off; sever; divide”). Compare German Schar (“troop”), Danish skare (“host", "crowd”).
