Past participle of sandmale. Alternatively construed as a compound of sand (“sand”) +‎ male (“to grind”).

1. (usually of a millstone or similar) ground with sand (as to hone it)

     That's why, on occation, the grindstone was honed, or even cut.

     I kvernhuset fann dei, at kverni maatta hava kleimt seg og trong um aa verta sandmali.

     In the millhouse, they found that the mill must have jammed, and had to be sanded.
