From Proto-West Germanic *samftī, from Proto-Germanic *samftija (adjective) (compare Proto-Germanic *sōmiz (agreeable, fitting)), from Proto-Indo-European *sóm-tu-, possibly from *sem- (one, whole).[1][2]
