Compound of ruig (“rough”) + poot (“paw, leg”). Referring to the hairy back of the hand, which is either in reference to a secret gesture among homosexual men or to a former practice of getting handsy with love interests to verify that they are gay in the days before there were dedicated gay clubs.[1]
