From roeg (“bird”) + a morpheme from Proto-Tai *ʔeːnᴮ (“swallow”). The second component is cognate with Thai แอ่น (ɛ̀n), Lao ແອ່ນ (ʼǣn), Shan ဢႅၼ်ႇ (ʼèn); also compare Middle Chinese 燕 (MC ʔenH, “swallow”).
