Etymology
From Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *ʀibu. First attested in the Kedukan Bukit inscription, 683 CE, as Old Malay [script needed] (rivu), in the form sarivu (current spelling seribu). Old Cham cognate form saribu also attested in the Đông Yên Châu inscription of the 4th century.
Also theorized to be late enough to be borrowed from Arabic رِبْوَة (ribwa) which meant “myriad” in reference to a currency.
