From Proto-Khasian *pʔut, from Proto-Mon-Khmer. Cognate with Khasi pyut, Proto-Katuic *pʔuus (“rancid”) (whence Kuy pɁoːh), Khmer ផ្អស់ (phʼɑh, “tasteless, stale; dried out”).
