Borrowing from Ancient Greek πτερῠγοειδής (pterugoeidḗs, like a wing), from πτέρῠξ (ptérux, a wing) + -ο- (-o-) + -ειδής (-eidḗs, -like, -oid). Doublet of pterygoīdeus.
