Borrowed from French pathologie. It was originally a purely medical term, however, through the term rodzina patologiczna (which means a “dysfunctional family”), the meaning of patologia was changed in the informal language to refer to the lowest, poorest, and dysfunctioning class of society; for example, people who become stealing alcoholics because of poverty.
