From Proto-Loloish *pway² (Bradley). Cognate with Burmese ဖွဲ (hpwai:), Tedim Chin buʔ³ vaːi², S'gaw Karen ဖ့ဘ့ၣ်ပှၢ် (hpaybaỳ phga̱, husk). Compare paex (to peel, to skin).
