From Proto-Hmong-Mien *pʰajH (“to cut open”), from Chinese 破 (OC *pʰˤaj-s) (B-S). Cognate with White Hmong phua. Compare also Vietnamese phay (“to chop, to cut open”) (as in dao phay).
