From Proto-Hmong-Mien *mbrəuX (“fish”). Cognate with Iu Mien mbiauz; outside of Hmong-Mien, compare Proto-Tai *plaːᴬ (“id”), whence Thai ปลา (bplaa, “id”).[1]
