Usage notes
Etymology 2
From Proto-Vietic *c-n-əm, from Proto-Mon-Khmer *cn₁am ~ *cn₁aam. Cognate with Muong năm, Kha Phong sənam¹, Khmer ឆ្នាំ (chnam), Bahnar hơnăm, sơnăm, Khasi snem and Mon သၞာံ (hnam). It is quite likely that this word was originally an infixed form of a verbal root, represented by Mon စာံ (“to dibble”). Within Vietic, the uninfixed form is found in Thavung cɔm¹ ("year") and Phong cɨm ("year").
Sometimes mistaken as related to Chinese 年 (nián) (SV: niên).
Noun
- a year
- kế hoạch năm năm ― a five-year plan
- năm nhất ― the first year in college
