From Low German not, nut, from Proto-Germanic *hnōjaną (“to smooth, join together”), from Proto-Indo-European *kneh₂-. Cognate with Danish not, Norwegian Bokmål not, Norwegian Nynorsk not, nót and German Nut.[1][2]
