Etymology
From Old French musel, diminutive of muse, from Late Latin mūsus (“muzzle”), of uncertain etymology but probably expressive of the shape of protruded lips and/or influenced by Latin mūgīre (“to moo, bellow”).
Cognate to Italian muso, Old Spanish mus, Lombard mus and muson. Not related to French morceau nor to Spanish morro (“hill; muzzle”), Provençal mourre (“muzzle”), Occitan morre (“hill; muzzle”).
