From Proto-Algonquian *meçkwesiwa (“he/she (animate) is red”). Cognate with Mohegan-Pequot musqisuw (“he/she is red”), Munsee máxksuw (“he/she is red”), Malecite-Passamaquoddy mqeyu (“he/she is red”), Ojibwe miskozi (“he/she is red”), Cree ᒥᐦᑯᓯᐤ (mihkosiw, “he/she is red”).
