From a merger of two verbs:
- Old Frisian lidzia (“to lie”), from Proto-West Germanic *liggjan
- Old Frisian lidza, ledza (“to lay”), from Proto-West Germanic *laggjan
Both derive ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *legʰ-.
