From Proto-Hmong *ʔlinᴬ (“monkey”), probably from Proto-Hmong-Mien *ʔbliŋ (“id”). Related to Proto-Mien *ʔbiŋᴬ (“id”); outside of Hmong-Mien, compare Proto-Tai *liːŋᴬ (“id”), whence Thai ลิง (ling, “id”).[1]
