Etymology 1
From Middle Dutch jacht, jaecht, jaget, from Old Dutch *jagot, from Proto-West Germanic *jagōþu (“hunt, hunting”). Cognate with German Jagd. The form jaecht is due to contraction and jacht to subsequent pre-cluster shortening. (Compare maagd, in which an analogous development was probably hindered by the potential homophone macht.)
