Either a reduction or reanalysis of synonymous īxxāyōtl (“tear”), from īxtli (“eye”) + xāyōtl (“discharge”), or a separate formation based on īxtli (“eye”) + āyōtl (“watery substance”), forming a minimal pair with īxxāyōtl.
