    • 1845, Peter Nicholson, The Mechanic's Companion:
      When floors are doweled, it is better to place dowels over the middle of the interjoist, than over the joists, in order to prevent the edge of one board from passing that of the other
  2. (carpentry) A middle joist or crossbeam.[1]
