Tokelauan

Etymology

From Proto-Polynesian *qilo-ŋa. Cognates include Tongan ʻilonga (sign; to be marked) and Samoan iloga (sign; to be distinct).

Equivalent to ilo (to be aware of) + -ga, where the original noun meaning ("mark, sign") was lost in Tokelauan, replaced by the derived fakailoga.
